Plein air painting in mixed media
I remember sketching this tree like it was yesterday. Being seated on one of my favorite benches in the Kwarekken nature area (Herselt), close to a wild bunch of giant beech trees. Over the years I’ve seen them change (grow mushrooms, develop burls, lose branches) but they never failed to warmly welcome me. It felt like a privilege that on this fine day in June 2024 I got the chance to sketch this tree who is, I am sure, a dear and special friend to many of us living here. As shown in the pictures, I added some final touches back home. If you like following my plein air painting adventures, I regularly share bits of my journey on Instagram.

Extra info
This series was part of the Grand Bazaar de Merode expo in september 2024 (curated by OXOt vzw) and titled ‘Hier zet ik mij neer’ (freely translated as ‘This is where I will sit down’).
In this blogpost (in Dutch) I share more about how I slowly but steadily rolled into plein air painting.
