Plein air painting in mixed media
If you look closely to one of the pictures you’ll see the tip of my then sketching pouch I had made myself. It was cool but didn’t stand the test of time. Nevertheless, it reminds me of that beautiful afternoon at the pic-nic place down by the river. On the bench behind me three young men took a break while discussing their plans for an upcoming event they were organizing. The bridge (Lange brug in het Riet, Westerlo) functions as a transitional element in the landscape between the town center and the surrounding nature lands with little roads leading to far away adventures for cyclists and passersby. (and people on horses in ancient times) What I didn’t sketch is the so called ‘Trammeke’ (which was recently being restored). It’s an old mobile dam used to collect water in the surrounding fields in otherwise dry periods.
That’s the beauty of plein air painting… watching the final sketches transports me back in time and place immediately. Instant joy and contentment. I guess that’s why I love sharing my sketching experiences and the sketches themselves. Both on Instagram, as well as through my shop.

Extra info
This series was part of the Grand Bazaar de Merode expo in september 2024 (curated by OXOt vzw) and titled ‘Hier zet ik mij neer’ (freely translated as ‘This is where I will sit down’).
In this blogpost (in Dutch) I share more about how I slowly but steadily rolled into plein air painting.
