Plein air painting in mixed media
Very warm, some would even say hot. Too hot for me to stay inside. Too hot for me to sit in the sun. Solution: find trees, hide and paint. The Westerlo town hall is an incredibly beautiful building dating from 1912 when it was built a summer house for countess Jeanne van de Merode. Nowadays, citizens come here to renew their passports or to marry. And of course the small yet stunning garden serves not only as a provider of shadow but also as a decor to many wedding pictures. Just so on this fine day in May 2024. A married couple and their funny photographer tested out different angles and laughed their way through the sunny day.
Every time I start a plein air sketch, I think I have a plan. A plan about which materials I’d like to use, or what style I’d like to experiment with. But honestly? To me it seems the subject takes the lead and defines where I will go after I decided where to sit down. I often share a snap shot of my experiences on my Instagram, I’d be happy to welcome you there.

Extra info
This series was part of the Grand Bazaar de Merode expo in september 2024 (curated by OXOt vzw) and titled ‘Hier zet ik mij neer’ (freely translated as ‘This is where I will sit down’).
In this blogpost (in Dutch) I share more about how I slowly but steadily rolled into plein air painting.
