Plein air painting in mixed media
Nothing beats a good teacher to reveal the secrets of drawing and painting in-person. Yet, for many years YouTube was my main go-to whenever I had questions or was clueless on how and where to start. In the days before I sat down on a tree stump to sketch these trees, I had been watching watercolor lessons by Kris DeBruine. Here, I learned the importance of values, and how to build them up in your painting. I even did a value sketch before diving in with the paint! Haha, it was so much fun. Even more so, because I was set up where the local gnome community gathers in the Beeltjens in Westerlo (Belgium).
Both myself and the gnomes regularly share about our adventures on Instagram. Come follow us over there! 😉

Extra info
This series was part of the Grand Bazaar de Merode expo in september 2024 (curated by OXOt vzw) and titled ‘Hier zet ik mij neer’ (freely translated as ‘This is where I will sit down’).
In this blogpost (in Dutch) I share more about how I slowly but steadily rolled into plein air painting.
