Plein air painting in mixed media
I created this sketch on my way home after sketching #03 – Beuk Kwarekken. In those first few weeks and months of plein air painting, I was constantly looking for good spots to sit down. A good spot holds at least a few of the following ingredients: a nice bench, a pretty view, a little bit of shade (in summer) or lots of sun (in colder times). Here, I was seated right next to a statue of the holy Gabriel in the center of Westerlo (Belgium). Although I didn’t sketch the statue, it felt like he was watching over me, while I was watching down the sun-lit path trying to capture the different trees and plants on both sides.
My many plein air adventures since taught me that sometimes you need to create a good spot yourself, so nowadays I often times take my own foldable stool with me. I love sharing my experiences, mainly on Instagram, so very welcome to follow me over there.

Extra info
This series was part of the Grand Bazaar de Merode expo in september 2024 (curated by OXOt vzw) and titled ‘Hier zet ik mij neer’ (freely translated as ‘This is where I will sit down’).
In this blogpost (in Dutch) I share more about how I slowly but steadily rolled into plein air painting.
