Plein air painting in mixed media
I believe this little hut is the one view in Westerlo (Belgium) I have sketched the most in the course of nearly two years of plein air painting. This “Hutje van de Gul” (or little hut that belongs to the local guild) is a point of reference to many of the people who live here, as well as for school children hanging out and tourists passing by on long walks. I love the freshness of this sketch while in reality I was sweating a lot and mosquitos thought I was a great meal as late June of 2024 was gifting us with lots of sunshine.
You can find this hut right next to the bench I was seated on to sketch #04 – Bij heilige Gabriël. In summer months, though, this bench is only accessible after the sun has set. You see, a local plein air sketcher knows her favorite spots well ;). For me, plein air painting is mainly about experiencing the moment, which I regularly write about on Instagram, and a little less so about the result. Yet, if the result is nice to look at, why not share that as well!

Extra info
This series was part of the Grand Bazaar de Merode expo in september 2024 (curated by OXOt vzw) and titled ‘Hier zet ik mij neer’ (freely translated as ‘This is where I will sit down’).
In this blogpost (in Dutch) I share more about how I slowly but steadily rolled into plein air painting.
